Immediate Guidance

While You Wait — What To Do

These steps can reduce pain and protect your tooth until you can get to us.

Knocked-out tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown only — do not touch the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing. If possible, place it back in the socket. If not, keep it moist in a small container of milk or hold it between your cheek and gum. Time matters: get to us within an hour for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Severe pain

Take over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as directed on the label — it works better for dental pain than acetaminophen because it reduces inflammation. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 10-minute intervals. Avoid applying heat to your jaw, which can make swelling worse.

Broken tooth

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Save any broken pieces in a small container — bring them with you. If a sharp edge is cutting your cheek or tongue, cover it with a small piece of dental wax or a piece of sugar-free gum as a temporary shield. Do not use regular wax or cotton.

Abscess or swelling

Do not attempt to pop or drain it. A dental abscess is an infection — popping it does not clear the bacteria and can spread it. Apply a cold compress outside the cheek only. Swelling near the throat or difficulty swallowing or breathing requires a 911 call, not a dental appointment. For all other abscess situations, call us immediately.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Leave a voicemail at either office number — we monitor messages outside of normal hours and return calls as soon as possible. If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, difficulty breathing, or severe swelling of the throat, call 911 or go directly to your nearest emergency room.
The cost depends on what treatment is needed — a simple exam and x-ray is a different situation than a root canal or extraction. We always provide a clear quote and review your options with you before proceeding with any paid treatment.
